Off-Roaders with Camping Trailers
4 Destinations In and Around Gauteng for Off-Roaders with Camping Trailers
We live in an incredibly beautiful country with wide-open spaces that simply begs to be explored and enjoyed. The large number of camping sites and game farms attest to this. Add to that the fantastic weather conditions we have, and you’ll start wondering why you’re not outdoors all of the time. Even if you live in the heart of Johannesburg, there’s a myriad of wonderful destinations just a drive away. And, for those with camping trailers who are willing to go off the beaten track, nothing short of a world of wonders awaits.
To reawaken that adventurous spirit in you and spur you on to get out there and explore, here are some of the best destinations in and around Gauteng to head over to, camping trailers in tow:
Kyleu Bush Camp, Dinokeng Game Reserve, Hammanskraal
Want to get really close to nature? This family-run camping spot offers affordable, luxurious bushveld accommodation for those with tents, off-road trailers, or caravans. The site boasts nice, spacious stands in the heart of the bushveld, where you get to camp surrounded by the Big Five and other animals roaming freely. There is no electricity, but there are braai facilities.
4×4 Kungwini Trails, Bronkhorstspruit
Whether you are a seasoned off-roader wanting to fine-tune some skills or a beginner on the 4×4 trials wanting to learn the ropes, this place is for you. Less than an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, you can pitch your tent in the secluded bush area of the farm and join the guides to familiarise yourself with the capabilities of your 4×4 on either their basic or advanced training courses. Alternatively, you can head out on the eco-trail – a 20-kilometre off-road mountain track on the Eastern Magaliesberg.
Vaal River Campsites, Wolwespruit Nature Reserve
For those who are looking for a serene and peaceful break in a beautiful setting, combined with the opportunity to fully put their camping trailers to use, this is the pace to go. Located about three hours from Johannesburg, this site on the banks of the Vaal River offers 32 stands, each with a braai area, a long drop, and a rubbish collection point. Only cold showers are available, and it might not be close to your stand. This is a perfect destination for some relaxed catch-and-release fishing next to the river.
Meiringskloof Nature Park, Fouriesburg
Located a bit further – about three and a half hours from Johannesburg – this idyllic campsite is nestled in a beautiful kloof surrounded by thick indigenous bush, sandstone cliffs and open caves. The site has a swimming pool and boasts a number of hiking trails, as well as 4×4 trails for both experienced and novice off-roaders. Nearby activities include abseiling and horse riding.
